Students at High Point University react to debate

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Becoming old enough to vote is simply a matter of time.  Becoming informed enough to vote intelligently, takes real effort.  Monday night at High Point University, dozens of students – most of whom are voting in a presidential election for the first time – showed how vast their influence will be.

And at least the ones gathered to watch the debate on the campus of High Point University take their entry into the voting world, very seriously.

“I think it’s going to be higher numbers, this year with the youth vote, than we’ve ever seen before,” said Matt Jakubowski, a student at HPU.

While the students listened to the debate, representatives from Fox News and other outlets were ready to hear what they thought about the debate

HPU/FOX8 Poll: Obama regains edge with NC voters

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A new High Point University/FOX8 poll indicates registered North Carolina voters now favor President Barack Obama for re-election in a near-reverse from the previous poll’s results.

The poll, which was conducted by live callers on the university’s campus, found 46 percent of participants said they would vote for Obama if the election were held today.  43 percent said they would vote for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

The previous HPU/FOX8 poll found 46 percent of voters would choose Romney as the next U.S. president, while 43 percent would choose to re-elect Obama.

The most recent survey was fielded between Sept. 8 and Sept. 13, while the previous survey was fielded in late August.

HPU students in Charlotte covering the DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — High Point University students are on the road working the Democratic National Convention as a part of their reality series, “The American Dream Project.”

The students, led by Communications professor Carol Davis, are hosting forums and working as journalists. They also filmed their project in Tampa for the Republican National Convention.

“This is a rather interesting time in the world of politics. Youth feel disengaged, I might even count myself in that, but I’ve become more engaged since starting this process,” said sophomore Hayley Ellman, who produced a Religion and Politics forum Wednesday afternoon.

“Everybody has a story to tell and it’s really cool that we’re on the end, that we’re able to tell it,” said HPU senior Sarah Martin, who works as a reporter for the project.

HPU/FOX8 Poll: Romney has slight edge with NC voters

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A High Point University/FOX8 poll completed shortly before Mitt Romney’s acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention finds the GOP presidential nominee has a slight edge over President Barack Obama with registered North Carolina voters.

The poll’s results indicate 46 percent of voters would choose Romney as the next U.S. president, while 43 percent would choose to re-elect Obama.

Another poll by the university completed a week prior to the RNC found the presidential candidates deadlocked in the state, with 43 percent selecting Romney and 43 percent selecting Obama.

HPU poll: Obama, Romney deadlocked in North Carolina

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A new poll from High Point University indicates President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are at a deadlock among registered North Carolina voters.

The university on Monday released the poll’s results, in which 43 percent of survey participants chose Obama and 43 percent chose Romney as the presidential candidate they would vote for if the election were held today.

“This has been a closely watched state from early on in the 2012 election cycle,” said Martin Kifer, director of the poll and assistant professor of political science at HPU. “The new poll shows that North Carolina is still a toss-up state in the presidential election.”

Aside from the two most popular choices, 6 percent of survey participants said they would vote for someone else, while 8 percent said they were undecided.
