Helping Hands Ministry to host ‘pay it forward’ raffle event

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The Helping Hands Ministry is hosting a “Paying it Forward” raffle event Thursday night in High Point.

The event will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the nonprofits headquarters, located at 2301 South Main St.

A $25 ticket enters participants in multiple drawings.  A total of 30 items are being given away.

Those who win items are encouraged to give the prizes away to someone in need.

Among items being raffled are a car, $100 cash, a Bose stereo, restaurant gift certificates and entertainment packages for activities like Putt-Putt or bowling.

Blair Park Golf Course Grill Room set to reopen Friday

HIGH POINT, N.C.–The Blair Park Golf Course in High Point will reopen The Grill Room Friday morning.

A fire earlier this year caused a significant amount of damage to the area. The golf course and pro shop re-opened last month.

I-74/US 311 connector to open week after Memorial Day

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. — The new Interstate 74/US 311 connector in Randolph County is expected to open the week after Memorial Day.

The I-74/US 311 bypass from Glenola (Cedar Square Rd.) to US 220 is expected to open the week after Memorial Day. The project has been delayed several times due to weather and rock blasting delays.

The goal of the connector is to connect Randolph, Guilford and Forsyth counties.

The project has been delayed several times. It was originally scheduled to open October 2012, then December 2012, then February 2013 and now the week after Memorial Day.

The estimated cost is $100 million.

The NC DOT is planning ribbon cutting ceremony.

Wesleyan’s Theo Pinson commits to UNC

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point Wesleyan’s Theo Pinson, the No. 13 player in the ESPN 60,  committed to UNC on Wednesday afternoon.

“It was a couple little things. My relationship with Roy was good, we really get along well and he’s easy to talk to. I talked to him more than the assistant coaches,” Pinson told ESPN.

The other finalists for the Wesleyan Christian Academy small forward were Indiana, Georgetown, Duke and Louisville.

Group outlines plans for High Point revitalization

HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point City Project Ignite spent about a week planning and consulting with urban planner and architect Andres Duany in brainstorming ideas for the revitalization and redevelopment of High Point.

City Project Vice Chairman Richard Wood said private investors and fundraising paid about $410,000 for the consultation.

Duany, of Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company, suggested more retail and restaurants in vacant spaces downtown and through shipping containers or “sea cans” that can be placed or stacked around Kivett Drive. He also suggested beautification changes throughout the city, which included cleaning the streets, adding more trees and extending the sidewalks around Lindsey Parkway.

The city also has plans to reach out to High Point University students with more shopping opportunities, business incubators, food trucks, live music and area festivals.

High Point to hold hazardous waste collection this weekend

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The City of High Point and Guildford County will host a hazardous household waste collection Saturday at the Mendenhall Transit Terminal, located at 220 East Commerce St.

The event will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Thomas Built invests in 1,500-Ton Press

HIGH POINT, N.C. – After more than a year of planning, training and negotiations, Thomas Built Buses is churning out its own parts and blanks on a new 1,500-ton press. Located in their High Point plant, the press is a key milestone in its manufacturing and corporate growth.

The new press is used for making parts including roof and floor sheets for the new C2 as well as exterior panels and structural supports such as roof bows.
