Communities Ready for Next Major Storm

Some communities in parts of High Point and Davidson County were hit hard by the last round of tornadoes in the Spring. Residents say they learned some serious lessons in survival, including how to help out others during times of need.

"It made us start getting along. We spoke before, but now we come up and get together for a cookout, and make a blow up thing for the kids," neighbor Jessica Flannery said. Flannery lives at the Valley Mobile Home Estates in Davidson County.

Besides relying on one another, residents of the tight-knit community also rely much more on the media, to tell them of their next weather threat.

Christmas Tree Buying Deterred By Rain

The rain kept down the large crowds normally seen at Christmas tree farms on Black Friday, making most business more like a trickle.

Three different lots FOX8 visited Friday had the same story: a trickle of customers. While not a complete washout, it was a much smaller crowd than usual. Some who braved the elements to buy trees said they still make family tradition a priority.

"As our family has gotten older and grown, we've gathered more Christmas items, and we decided to start putting things together earlier," Kim Harvey of High Point said.

New Highway 311 Bypass Section Opens Monday

Officials cut the ribbon on a new 6.5 mile stretch of the Highway 311 bypass on Monday, about six months ahead of schedule.

The roadway stretches from Business 85 in High Point to Cedar Square Road in Randolph County. The new road will serve as a faster route from south High Point to Randolph County, as well as alleviate traffic on Main Street.

"The more neighborhoods that have been built in the area in recent years, traffic increased dramatically," Andrew Hill of Kenwood Village said.
