High Point Public Library hosting photography sessions

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- The High Point Public Library will host an introduction to photography workshop for aspiring photographers this month.

The event takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays from May 17 through May 31 at The High Point Public Library at 901 North Main St. It is free and open to the public. 

Officials said the three part workshop will be taught by Ken Sunshine Photography owner Ken Sunshine.

The class is billed as a way to explore the process of making great photos. 

Officials said all aspect of digital photography will be discussed, beginning with an introduction to terms and concepts.

Participants will be asked to bring their cameras for part two in order to put some composition techniques to the test.

Their photos will be will be examined and critiqued during the class’ third part.

Triad Musicians to Share Songwriting Techniques in High Point

Triad-area musicians Ken Mickey and Jack Gorham will discuss and share songwriting techniques Thursday, August 18 at the High Point Public Library.

The event runs from 6-7 p.m. at the library’s location at 901 N. Main St. in High Point. It is free and open to the public.

Mickey is a High Point guitarist currently promoting his instrumental album “Fun with Guitars." He also teaches guitar at Wherehouse Studios in Winston-Salem.

Gorham is a Triad-area songwriter, composer and pianist. He is currently promoting an instrumental piano release called “Noodle.”

HPU Students to Offer Prague Studies

HPU Students to Offer Prague Studies

High Point University will offer students a change to study at the Prague Institute in the Czech Republic next spring, the High Point Enterprise reported.

It will be a faculty-in-residence program with Marlon Winters, professor of business administration, traveling with the students while they study in Prague for a full semester.

The program is a partnership with North Carolina State University, according to the paper.

“Prague will allow our students many educational and cultural experiences in Eastern Europe under the instruction of an HPU faculty member," said Dennis Carroll, HPU provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Students will also have the opportunity to visit surrounding cities known for their history and culture, including Berlin, Budapest, Vienna and Istanbul.

John Coltrane Festival Looking for Volunteers

John Coltrane Festival Looking for Volunteers

About 50 volunteers are wanted to help with the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival Sept. 3 at Oak Hollow Festival Park.

High Point’s Friends of John Coltrane organization is hosting a volunteer sign-up event Saturday for those interested, according to the High Point Enterprise.

The sign-in event takes place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the High Point Parks and Recreation Facility at 136 Northpoint Ave.

“We will have several facets of the festival that will have to be covered,” said Bernita Sims, co-chair of the festival, according to the paper.

Volunteers are needed for several duties including taking tickets, checking bags, checking identification for alcohol sales and controlling the sales.

The volunteers will work for at least three hours a shift and will be able to attend the concert for free and receive a T-shirt.

The festival is a musical event dedicated to jazz legend John Coltrane, who grew up in High Point.

Hartley Drive YMCA Names New Director

The Hartley Drive YMCA in High Point has named Gart Evans its new executive director, according to the High Point Enterprise.

“The Y is most fortunate to have Gart in this leadership role,” said Ron Austin, chief executive officer of the YMCA of Greater High Point, according to the paper.

Evans worked at High Point University from 1981-2009, serving as director of public safety, dean of students and director of alumni-development.

He has also served in the High Point Police Department Reserve Unit and as board chairman of Piedmont Triad Ambulance & Rescue.

HPU Student Conducting Research in New York

HPU Student Conducting Research in New York

High Point University junior Mary Funke is conducting research at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. this summer, according to university officials.

Funke was chosen among 800 applicants and is one of 28 students nationwide selected for the Center for Material Research REU Internship program.

She will conduct research in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department during the 10-week internship. She will study the transistor interface to DNA and associated surface electrochemistry.

Other students interning come from Princeton University, the University of California at Berkley. Funke is majoring in chemistry with a minor in math.

"I was unsure about having a research project in an unfamiliar subject. However, with High Point's education and my previous research, I have the foundation that I need to succeed," Funke said, according to a prepared press release.

Grants to Help Plan High Point Museum’s Future

Grants to Help Plan High Point Museum’s Future

High Point officials have secured funding for a long-range plan for the High Point Museum, Historic Park and adjacent properties, the High Point Enterprise reported.

The planning process for the Heritage Point project should be done sometime in the new fiscal year, which starts July 1, said the Neal F. Austin High Point Public Library Director Kem Ellis.

There are two grants funding the project: $30,000 from the High Point Historical Society and $40,000 from the Hayden-Harman Foundation.

The City Council last Monday adopted a budget amendment appropriating the funds, the paper reported.
