Company visits site of possible call center

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The man who will ultimately decide to open a call center that could employ as many as 2,000 people has a better idea of what the Piedmont Triad has to offer.

Bill Bartmann was in a business park in the High Point and Greensboro area looking at property he might want to use for those jobs.

North Carolina is one of five states in the running for his business.

Bartmann runs a company called CFS2 which started as a debt collection service. The CFS2 call center would bring 2,000 jobs to whichever city is selected.

Among the locations within the Piedmont, CFS2 is considering Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point, where NCO Customer Management recently announced it would close its call center along with cutting 658 jobs.

If High Point is selected, the call center would occupy the former NCO building on Highway 68.

Rain damaging strawberry crops in Guilford County

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Strawberry grower, James Kenan has been worrying a lot lately about his strawberry crop after recent thunderstorms washed away 15 percent of their profits.

Kenan, who owns Bernie’s Berries in Greensboro, said rainfall can be damaging to his six-acre crop as it makes strawberries more susceptible to fungus.

“Strawberries need water, but they need it from underneath,” Kenan said.

Kenan sells other produce, but most of his income comes from people picking and buying strawberries.

“It is heartbreaking… It really is,” said Kenan.

Ingram’s Strawberry Farm in High Point also has water damage, but Rhonda Ingram said she can shrug it off a little easier.

Fallen traffic lights close ramps at Hwy 311 in High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. — Several entrance and exit ramps at Highway 311 near Brentwood Street in High Point are currently closed due to a crash that caused a row of traffic signals to fall close to the roadway.

Troopers at the scene said the driver of a Lexus of an unknown model was getting off at the Highway 311 bypass when it ran a red light, colliding with a Mercedes sedan that was getting on Business I-85 North around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

As a result of the collision, the Mercedes crashed into a utility pole that supports the traffic signals.

The traffic lights fell toward the ground.  DOT crews are currently working to get them repaired, but there was no estimate as to how long the repairs would take.

Both vehicles ended up in a nearby ditch.

All ramps leading to North Business I-85, Brentwood Street, and Highway 311 from the bypass are currently closed.
